RACHEL ROSSIN: Works from THE MAW OF
September 7 - October 15, 2023

Using visual language from gaming, mythos, and documentary video, THE MAW OF explores the nature of time, contemporary image culture, and humans’ ever-expanding and shifting relationship with technology. Rather than presenting the digital realm in opposition to our bodily existence, here it is both an extension of our humanness and a provocative ongoing merging of brain and machine.
Haunting and mysterious, the works from THE MAW OF present an uncanny techno-sphere where ghostly avatars lurk in the shadows. Seductive yet intimidating, the glowing figures draw us in as they traverse through a gamified neighborhood. Blurring physical and digital realities, the saturated colors of the room-sized animation immerse us in Rossin’s enigmatic world. As an embodied experience, it implicates us, as we too become ‘avatars’ in the eerie digital landscape.
At first glance, Rossin’s paintings have a brighter presence, one grounded in the materiality of paint, canvas, and the handmade, yet they too conjure mystery and intrigue. Both the paintings and digital works offer immediate visual and visceral experiences. Joined together, they conjure ambivalent spaces, where we find ourselves entangled in overlapping modes of being and in states of mutual becoming with the virtual and the real.
