Echoes of the Heart: The New England Media Art Biennial

Media art is experimental, embracing innovation and new technologies. Although integral to the broader contemporary art world, it is the focus of only a few regional venues. Emerson Contemporary proudly specializes in media art and art of the moving image, and we established this biennial to provide an opportunity for artists to share this type of work. As an academic gallery, we are honored to provide the space, time, and resources for artists to present new work, expand existing practices, and introduce their ideas to new audiences.
The selected projects feature digitally altered ‘traditional’ media – radio, television, weaving, painting, and photography – while questioning how these media matter today. In previously unseen combinations, the artists share their sense of wonder, vulnerability, and a desire for connection. Although presented through a technological lens, these artists convey mystery, affect, and care, modalities where the brain and the heart support each other. It is this particular sensitivity that inspired our title: Echoes of the Heart.
